Chipata, Katate Receive Tractors

The ZNFU on Friday 15th March, 2013 handed over two tractors with matching equipment (trailers, rippers, planters, and shellers) to two farmers practicing conservation farming in Katete and Chipata Districts.
The equipment was purchased under the Mechanization Project, which is being implemented jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with financial support from the European Union (EU). The ceremonies were graced by the two District Commissioners (DCs) for Katete and Chipata, Col. Kaisa (Retired) and Mr. Kalunga Zulu respectively. The Acting Provincial Agricultural Coordinator, Mr. Kanenga, MAL staff and other government officials were also present at the handover ceremonies.

ZFEA / NUPAAW Endorse New Wages

The Zambia Farm Employers Association (ZFEA) and their social partners the National Union for Plantation, Agriculture and Allied Workers (NUPAAW) have finally endorsed the new wages for the farm workers.
The new wages will take effect as from 1st March, 2013 and the members of the ZNFU/ZFEA are advised to contact the ZNFU secretariat for the signed copies of the new wages.
 

ZNFU Corporates Meet

ZNFU Corporate members held their meeting on the 27th February 2013 to discuss among others things the issues affecting their operations as well as conducted the Annual General Meeting. The Secretariat gave updates on some of the lobby achievements scored so far. Highlights were also given on developments made by the Union to ensure financial payment systems are rolled out, updates on ZNFU representation on statutory bodies, developments in commodities, developments in 2013 labour negotiations, farm security issues, updates from ZESCO and current discussions on the companies and Insolvency bills as well as BoZ amendment bills. ZNFU, Germany Agriculture Society Confer

The Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) and the Germany Agriculture Society (DLG) on Friday 15th March,2013 conferred and sought ways in which they could strengthen collaboration in a bid to improve agricultural productivity in Zambia.
The DLG, represented by an eight-man strong delegation, including staff from the Germany Embassies in Lusaka and Pretoria, were presented with a ZNFU overview, its structures, services and growth plans. The DLG also made a presentation where they noted similarities with the operations of the Union. The DLG, which has been in existence for the last 125 years intimated that they were willing to partner with the Union, especially towards technological transfer and enhancement, plant production and the whole value chain and support farmer extension training with support from the ZNFU.

ZNFU Board Meets New Minister of Agriculture and Livestock

Led by the ZNFU President, the ZNFU Board held a meeting with the new Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Honourable Robert Sichinga, MP on Tuesday 26th February 2013. The meeting was held in a very candid atmosphere and the Union used the opportunity to outline the constraints affecting the competiveness of the agriculture sector (by providing details of areas where production costs could be reduced) and also outlined outstanding key legislation such as the Agriculture Marketing Act; the Statutory Instrument to appoint a warehouse receipt licensing authority; commodity exchanges bill, etc. Other issues covered were on productivity challenges including the future of the Fertilizer Input Support Programme, marketing and infrastructure challenges and on trade especially with regards to unfair competition from imports and exports of selected agriculture products.
