Inflation Declines

The annual rate of inflation, as measured by the all item Consumer Price Index (CPI), reduced by 0.2 percentage points to 8.2% in August 2010 from 8.4% recorded in last month. Union Meets HON. Chituwo

The ZNFU President, the first Vice President, D. Gordon, Board member, G. Rae and Secretariat staff, namely, Acting Executive Director and the Head, Outreach Member Services and Administration met the Minister of Science, Technology & Vocational Training, Hon. Brian Chituwo at an interactive lunch. The Union discussed with the Minister the current issues affecting agriculture and highlighted national budget priority issues that need to be addressed to move the sector forward.

Screening Fees on Imported Veterinary Products

The Union has received information that the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority intends to implement screening fees on imported Veterinary products. Statutory Instrument No. 7 of 2008 of the Pharmaceuticals act (No.14) of 2004 requires all imported Pharmaceutical products to be screened at a fee of 2% of FOB invoice value in local currency. If this fee is implemented in its present form, it will be yet another added cost of production that livestock farmers will have to face, and would ultimately affect the competitiveness of the livestock industry.

Stakeholders Meet over Soya & Maize Bran

Following concerns reaching the Ministry of Agriculture & Cooperatives (MACO) that there may not be enough soya beans to meet local demand and lack of maize bran for livestock farmers, the ZNFU held a consultation meeting on Tuesday 24th August 2010 with all the key stakeholders, namely, traders, processors, farmers and MACO.

Deputy Labour Minister Meets Farmers and Employers in Chongwe

The Deputy Minister of Labour; Honourable Simon Kachimba MP yesterday held meeting with farmers, farm employers and other business persons and entrepreneurs  in Chongwe in the Council Chambers. The Deputy Minister informed farmers that the meeting was meant to create a consultative platform meant to share views on issues affecting employees and employers. The Deputy Minister also highlighted casualization and high incidences of child labour as some of the labour challenges which require tripartite efforts to resolve.
