ZNFU Holds 107Th Annual Congress

The Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) held its 107th Annual Congress which attracted about 800 farmers from across all 69 District Farmers’ Associations (DFAs) around the country from 9th to 11th October 2012 at the Mulungushi International Conference Center (MICC) in Lusaka.
This year’s Congress under the theme: Livestock and Agricultural Exports, took a different complexion with the hosting of the first ever ZNFU Women Farmers’ Conference, which culminated into the formation of the Women Farmers’ Forum. This was in recognition of the critical role women play in contributing towards national food security.
The Congress also segregated commodity committees, which included Grains, Livestock, Oil seeds and Fruits and Vegetables, and took farmers to various locations and farms to have first hand information on how new technologies are being applied to enhance efficiency and increased productivity, an experience farmers lauded as eye-opening. Some committees held Annual General Meetings and elections at various locations, while some conducted them at MICC.
The Congress, which closed on Thursday 11th October, was graced by His Honor the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Guy Scott
