The Republican President of Zambia, his Excellency: Mr. Rupiah Bwezani Banda on 2nd September, 2011 officially launched the Mechanization Project which is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU), with financial support from the European Union (EU). At the launch the President handed over six tractors with matching equipment (trailers, Rippers, planters, boom sprayers and shellers) to six farmers practicing conservation farming.
In the initial project, 26 farmers are receiving tractors with matching equipment while 180 farmers are receiving ox-drawn implements. The total value of the equipment for tractors and ox-drawn implements beneficiaries is estimated at K6.3billion. Mr. Banda was pleased to launch the Tractor Mechanization for small scale farmers as part of the fulfillment of the pledge he made in 2008, of expanding the agriculture sector. The mechanized agriculture will contribute to increased agricultural production and productivity, while improving production efficiency by reducing cost per unit of production.
