The recent increase of land rates by nearly one thousand percent (1000%) by the Ministry of Lands has shocked the entire farming community. Members may be aware that less than two years ago, the Ministry of Lands increased the land rates by between 500-600%.
This was done through the issuance of the Statutory Instrument No: 44 of 2006 under the Lands Act CAP 184 (Ground Rent, Fees and Charges) of the Laws of Zambia which came into effect on 13th February 2007. The increase caused a lot of difficulties to farmers of all sizes to meet the land rate payment obligations.
Surprising and shockingly so, the Minister of Lands has issued another Statutory Instrument No: 110 of 2009, which took effect on 1st January 2010, increasing the land rates by nearly 1000%. Check the ZNFU Reaction under Press Statements on this.
