ZNFU Meets Parliamentarians Over BOZ Bill

The ZNFU on Thursday, 28th February 2013 appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs to make an oral presentation on the concerns over the proposed amendment of the BoZ Act. The proposals in the bill are aimed at introducing regulations to control exports and imports, investments as well as capping bank interest rates. This was a joint submission made in collaboration with the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM), the Chamber of Mines, Tourism Council of Zambia and Zambia Chamber of Small and Medium Association (ZCSMBA). ZNFU was represented by Dr Evelyn Nguleka, the first ZNFU Vice President, Mr. Davie Gordon and the Secretariat.

ZNFU Board Meets New Minister of Agriculture and Livestock

Led by the ZNFU President, the ZNFU Board held a meeting with the new Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Honourable Robert Sichinga, MP on Tuesday 26th February 2013. The meeting was held in a very candid atmosphere and the Union used the opportunity to outline the constraints affecting the competiveness of the agriculture sector (by providing details of areas where production costs could be reduced) and also outlined outstanding key legislation such as the Agriculture Marketing Act; the Statutory Instrument to appoint a warehouse receipt licensing authority; commodity exchanges bill, etc. Other issues covered were on productivity challenges including the future of the Fertilizer Input Support Programme, marketing and infrastructure challenges and on trade especially with regards to unfair competition from imports and exports of selected agriculture products.

Luwingu Runs Out Of Mealie Meal

Luwingu District has in the past one week experienced mealie meal shortages despite having enough maize stocks in the FRA holding depot where they are selling the commodity at KR60.00 to local residents. Meanwhile, there is fear that the district might not record the same bumper harvest as last season (2011-2012) due to late distribution of FISP inputs. 
 

BoZ Governor Addresses ZNFU’s Agribusiness And Corporate Members

The Bank of Zambia Governor Dr. Michael Gondwe addressed the Agribusiness Chambers and Corporate Members at the meeting held by the agribusiness chamber members on the 21st February 2013 at the ZNFU offices. A number of policy issues affecting the agriculture sector were discussed and also highlights of some of the policy reforms the government is undertaking to address the cost of finance in the country. Among the issues discussed include the macro-economic focus for 2013, the recent trends in the reduction of interest rates from 16.3% recorded at the end of December 2012 to 16.1% recorded end of January 2013. He, however, indicated that the Central Bank is still concerned that interest rates are relatively high and not responding to inflation and other market fundamentals.

FRA Offloads Maize

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has started selling maize to the general public at reduced price in Mkushi district. Confirming the development, FRA District Marketing Officer (DMO), Mr. Manda stated that in line with the Agency mandate of stabilizing food prices and ensuring stable supply of the staple crop, the Agency has started offloading stocks to the community at the price of KR1.20 per kg or KR60 per 50kg bag. He added that an individual is only allowed to buy 5 by 50kg bags per month.
