ERB Invites ZNFU to ZESCO Proposed Tariff Increase – Public Hearing

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has set Friday 25th June 2010, as the date for the Public Hearing on the proposed tariff adjustment by the power company. ZNFU has been invited to make the submission.  The ZNFU submission is based on the views that were solicited from the members countrywide over a period over one month.

Tiger Chicks Launched

Last Thursday 10th June 2010, Tiger Chicks was launched at the colourful ceremony held at their new premises in Lusaka West. The new slow feather broiler breed, the Lohmann Meat Broiler has the requisite characteristics that will make our Zambian farmers produce chickens at low cost hence making the poultry industry competitive both locally and internationally. Zambia is the first country in Africa to have this breed of chicken.

Government Pledges to Priotise Cattle Restocking Exercise

Government has pledged to make good its promise to restock livestock in the Eastern Province. Responding to cries by livestock farmers in Chipata’s Chinjala area during the tour of Eastern Province, the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Honourable Bradford Machila said his Ministry would deliver on its promise and restock the province with cattle.

ZNFU-GOVT Urge Farmers to Hold on to Maize

The Union has called on farmers to hold on to their maize instead of selling their produce to briefcase businessmen who are clearly reaping them off. Speaking during the tour of Eastern Province with the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Honourable Bradford Machila, Union president Jervis Zimba said briefcase businessmen were literally stealing from farmers by buying maize at costs that are lower than production costs.

Zambia Records the Highest Maize Production in History

The Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives announced the crop forecast results today. Zambia is expected to harvest a bumper crop of Maize of 2,795,483 MT from the last season of 1,887,010 MT posting an increase in Maize production of 48% (908473MT). The Bumper harvest comes at a time when the country has a carryover stock of 298,681 MT pushing the figure of available maize to 3,094,164 MT.
