Labour Matters – Progress on New Statutory Instrument

Regrettably, the Union has not received any official correspondence from the office of the Labour Commissioner on the matter, despite active follow ups by the Zambia Federation of Employers (ZFE), to which ZNFU and the Zambia Farm Employers Association (ZFEA) are affiliated. Initially the Union’s strategy was to pursue this matter through the ZFE and earlier in the week we did indicate to ZFE that the Union and the members were losing patience.

Soya beans Matters

The ZNFU has called for a Soyabeans Stakeholders meeting to be held on Thursday 24th February 2011 at the ZNFU Head office in Lusaka. The meeting will be preceded by the Oil seeds Commodity Committee meeting to be held at 09:30 hours. At the last Soyabeans Stakeholders’ meeting held on 3rd December 2010, the meeting resolved to hold a review meeting on the soyabeans situation towards the end of February 2011.

President Rupiah Banda launches the Sixth National Development Plan

On Friday 4th February 2011 the Head of State launched the Six National Development Plan (SNDP) following the end of the Fifth National Development Plan (FNDP) on 31st December 2010. The SNDP will cover the period 2011 – 2015. The Zambia National Farmers’ Union through the Agricultural Sector Advisory Group was involved in the formulation of the SNDP. At the launch, the ZNFU was represented by the Executive Director.

 

Wheat Matters

Thursday 10th February 2011 has been set as the date for the presentation of the Wheat Verification study which was conducted by the Agricultural Consultative Forum (ACF). At the last Wheat Stakeholders’ meeting, held on 14th January 2011, the ZNFU was mandated to request ACF to conduct the study.  We are pleased to announce that ACF has completed the assignment.

Fertilizer Shortages Continue Affecting a Number of Farming Districts

In Mkushi and Serenje, the deficit supply situation has resulted into rising prices for both Urea and Basal fertilizers which are now fetching around ZMK210,000 and ZMK230,000 respectively.
