ZESCO Limited has completed three of the four units that it has been rehabilitating since 2000 and brightened the prospects of reducing load shedding. ZESCO made the revelation during a conducted tour of the Kariba North Bank Power Plant in Siavonga on Thursday 16th June 2011, where the ZNFU, among other public and private sector stakeholders, was invited by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) for a familiarization tour and update on the country’s current electricity situation.

10th AGOA FORUM HELD

Lusaka saw a hive of activity from 8th to 10th June 2011 when African AGOA member states, the private sector/Civil society organizations and USA counterparts, namely, Government officials and private sector all converged in the Kapital. The Forum was opened by His Excellency President Rupiah Bwezani Banda and closed by the US Foreign Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton.

GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES K1BILLION FOR LUSWISHI FARM BLOC

Government has allocated K1 billion for the development of the Luswishi farming bloc on the Copperbelt. The announcement was made by His Excellency Rupiah Bwezani Banda when he officially opened the Copperbelt Agriculture Mining and Commercial Show in Kitwe on Wednesday, 1st June 2011.

President Banda said the money will be channeled towards the development of roads, bridges and dams in the Luswishi farming bloc. He said once operational, agricultural production was expected to grow.

DROP IN MAY FOOD PRICES NOT ADEQUATE TO OFFSET HIGH GLOBAL FOOD PRICES

The International Food Prices have dropped by a modest 1.3% in May, 2011. This is according to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Food Price Index which averaged 232 points in May from 235 points in April. However, the May 2011 index exceeds the May 2010 figure by 37 percent. FAO has attributed the May 2011 slight drop to the declines in the International prices of cereals and sugar which more than offset the increase in the meat and dairy prices.

Tripartite Free Trade Area

The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry called a meeting this week and shared information on the work that had been done so far in preparation for an upcoming summit of Heads of States on the Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA), expected to be held in July 2011 during which the negotiations will be expected to be officially launched.
