The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives called a meeting on 9th September, 2011 to discuss the maize bran shortage at which ZNFU and the Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) were present. During this meeting MAZ reported that the shortage of maize bran was primarily because millers were emerging from a period of low milling conditions due to low demand for mealie meal which is commonly experienced after harvest. Resulting from this, supply of bran has been limited while demand was at its peak. In terms of exports, millers submitted that there was no incentive for them to export except that some bran sold for domestic purposes might be exported by third parties and not necessarily millers.

The decrease in the August inflation has been attributed to a decline in the prices of both food and non-food items. The annual food inflation rate declined from 5.9 percent in July 2011 to 5.4 percent in August 2011.
